CMT Production Synopses for 2012
SESSION 1 "Esther"
June 18 — June 23
This is Kären Salveson’s newest musical. This scripture story about a beautiful Hebrew girl who rose above all expectations to become Queen takes on a modern twist with this original script and 10 fabulous songs. With the character Mordecai to “hooray” and the evil character Haman to “boo”, this rollicking story will engage and delight audience and players alike, reminding each that we possess the power to make a difference in the world.
Watch the beautiful Queen Esther reveal her true identity to save her people!
This scripture story plays like a classic Fairy Tale with a melodrama twist.
SESSION II "We Have a Right"
July 9 — 14
When a favorite camp is destined for destruction, its loyal campers are
devastated. Dorie, the camp director, is intimidated by the power plays of
nasty Mr. Suit. With all hope gone, the camp seems destined to become a
power plant; but never underestimate the power of a child. As the children
come together to save the camp, they realize that though they are small,
they are capable of great things. Camp Yahweh is a place full of great fun,
memorable songs, and rockin dances. Why would you go to any other camp?
“We Have a Right” is one of our oldest shows. All CMT campers play the part of campers at Camp Yahweh in the production. The songs are wonderful and every child will also participate in a big choreographed movement called “The Sneak.”
Even though this show was originally written over twenty years ago, the message rings true today.
SESSION III "Soul Survivor"
July 30 — Aug 4
In this wacky courtroom drama, a teenage girl sues society for the gross neglect of her soul. Memorable character witnesses are called to the stand. A physiology lesson ensues as the heart, brain, and senses and other body parts testify with crazy songs and dances. The court determines that the soul is bigger than the sum of the parts. But there is a glimmer of hope; for even this weary soul can be found and revived with the gift of unconditional love.
Group IV campers play the parts of the lawyers, judge, television reporters, courtroom employees, witnesses, and the Devil and his assistants. The teenage girl and her friends are also from group IV.
Group III plays the parts of the brain and nervous system.
Group II plays the parts of the heart.
Group I plays the senses.
“Soul Survivor” is a very funny show with wonderful songs and dances! This is one of our newest shows and will be performed for only the second time in Morgan Hill
SESSION IV "Spirit of the Universe"
August 6 — August 11
“Spirit of the Universe” is a hilarious space adventure. The show is set in the future and opens with a rousing all cast song entitled “Smile.” All the kids dance into the auditorium and play the part of the game show audience. Eight lucky kids are chosen to try to win the grand prize. (An all expenses paid vacation to the planet Zorbon!) Four group IV kids win the prize. We are introduced to the bumbling pilot, Brink Able, and his lovely assistant (and flight attendant) Pinnie Larue. Our six voyagers take off and try to fly to Zorbon.
They crash land on the planet Vivian, where everything on the planet is black and white. The group II kids play the parts of the people of Vivian. Everything on this planet is “right or wrong”…. “black or white.” “There are no grey areas on Vivian!”, says the leader of the planet. When a native of Vivian stubs her toe and it begins to turn black and blue, a hilarious situation ensues. The planet Vivian natives realize that they do have different opinions and that each one of them has a right to express them.
Next, our heroes crash land on the planet Jafter. The young children of group I play the parts of the children of Jafter. The boys are knights and the girls are princesses. Their counselors play the adult people of Jafter. The odd thing about the Planet Jafter is that the children are in charge and the adults are in reality… the children. The children speak to one another in poems.
The next planet the kids crash land on is Norbon. The natives of this planet all look like our flight attendant Pinnie Larue. They are all trapped behind a mask and don’t show their true feelings. When their masks get ripped off their hidden emotions are shown. A very funny scene ensues!
Once again Captain Brink crash lands on the next planet. (Kamoo) This planet is visually pleasing as the campers of group III play the part of aliens that have no legs or arms. They are all pod-like creatures and are highly intelligent. They speak in machine-like voices and soon have our crew realizing that the creatures of Kamoo are superior in every way except that they can’t pick up their precious gift from the “Great artist.” (God) The humans end up helping them pick up their lost art and both groups end up learning from each other.
A group called “The Rockets” sing a song before every scene. These girls will be cast from group III and IV and must be able to tap dance and sing.
There are eleven songs and dances in “Spirit of the Universe.”
“Spirit of the Universe” teaches us a simple lesson: that the Holy Spirit is with us wherever we go!
