Advent Lutheran Church

Communion Instruction Class

Together, the child, his or her parents, and the pastor decide the age at which a child begins receiving communion. We invite baptized children to continually grow in their understanding of communion as they grow in years and as they receive communion. Once each year, usually in the spring, Advent Lutheran Church offers communion instruction for children in grades 1-6, along with their parents. We expect one or more parents or grandparents to attend three 90-minute sessions with their child or children. For more information on the dates and times of the next Communion Instruction Class, call the church office at 408-779-3551 or email the office at office@advent-lutheran.org.

The communion instruction classes include Bible storytelling and drama, hands-on learning activities and prayer. The sessions are as follows:

1. GOD'S PEOPLE CELEBRATE AT THE WELCOME TABLE

The Bible basis is the Passover and the escape from Egypt (Exodus 12:1-14, 31-32, 37-42) and the Feeding of the 5,000 (Luke 9:10-17).

2. JESUS SHARES BREAD AND WINE AT THE WELCOME TABLE

The Bible basis is Jesus eating the Passover and instituting his Supper (Matthew 26:17-30).

3. WE INVITE OTHERS TO THE WELCOME TABLE

The Bible basis is Jesus known in the breaking of the bread (Luke 24:13-35).
